Champaign School Bus Hit With Gunfire; No Students Hurt

Neil Street and Arcadia Drive in Champaign.

CHAMPAIGN – A Champaign Unit 4 school bus was struck by gunfire Thursday while transporting students home. No students or staff were injured.

A statement from the Champaign Police Department says officers responded to the area of Neil Street and Arcadia Drive just before 3 pm for the report of shots fired.

Police found a crash involving multiple vehicles – at the intersection of Moreland and Town Center Boulevard.

A 34-year-old male with non-life-threatening injuries was transported to a local hospital and is expected to be released.

Police say a preliminary investigation indicates the man was traveling northbound on Neil Street when his vehicle was struck by gunfire – believed to be from a passing vehicle.

During the gunfire, the school bus was struck by a single round.

In an email to parents, Unit 4 officials said they’re grateful to the driver of the school bus who stayed calm and quickly pulled the bus over to ensure students were safe.

No one was been arrested in connection with the shooting.
