Illinois, Indiana hoping for strong start to Big Ten play

Chase Brown brings in a pass from Tommy DeVito for a touchdown in Illinois' 38-6 win over Wyoming on Sat. Aug. 27 in Champaign

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Illinois opens Big Ten play at Indiana on Friday night following its convincing Week Zero win over Wyoming. The Illini topped the Cowboys 38-6 behind three touchdowns and 151 yards rushing from Chase Brown.

Quarterback Tommy DeVito, a transfer from Syracuse, threw for 194 yards and two touchdowns in his Illinois debut.

This will be the Hoosiers’ opener. Indiana has won the last three in the series. The teams haven’t met since 2013.

The Hoosiers enter the season on an eight-game losing streak.

Indiana coach Tom Allen hasn’t announced whether Jack Tuttle or Missouri transfer Connor Bazelak will start at quarterback. Allen has resumed calling the defensive signals. He was Indiana’s defensive coordinator for a year before getting the head coaching job in 2017.
