China typically buys close to half of the soybeans grown in the U.S. But the ongoing trade war means farmers in the Midwest must consider other options — and none are as profitable.

For years, NPR’S Emily Feng criss-crossed China, bringing intimate and informative stories about the nation of 1.4 billion people, but in 2022, the country’s government said she could not report from there anymore.

Miller called Chinese land acquisition “a direct attack on our sovereignty” and said the legislation is needed to protect America’s food supply and communities.

“The US’s practice of escalating tariffs on China is a mistake on top of a mistake,” the ministry said in a statement announcing the fresh round of levies.

The letter from the House committee asks for information on the U of I’s Chinese International student population — claiming that relying on foreign enrollment could pose a national security threat.

Starting just past midnight Tuesday, imports from Canada and Mexico are now taxed at 25%, with Canadian energy products subject to 10% import duties. In addition, the 10% tariff that Trump placed on Chinese imports in February was doubled to 20%.

For his second term, Trump proposed various tariffs on the campaign trail and after his election, including a 60% tariff increase on Chinese imports and an additional 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico.
