WEATHER ALERT: Severe storms expected late this afternoon and evening

Who Can Get Tested For COVID-19 In Champaign County?

With testing kits in short supply, Champaign County health officials are limiting who meets the criteria to get tested for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

Now, the priority will be given to hospitalized patients with severe acute lower respiratory illness, such as pneumonia, as well as people in vulnerable populations who live in settings such as assisted living facilities where there has been a cluster of confirmed cases.

Tests will not be available to people who are exhibiting symptoms but are under 60 years old and do not have underlying health conditions. Tests are also not available for those who are mildly ill or asymptomatic.

If you experience symptoms of COVID-19, including fever, cough or shortness of breath, for more than three or four days, health officials urge you to call your doctor instead of visiting in person. Your doctor will determine the best course of action. This helps to protect healthcare workers and conserve protective gear for staff.

So far, only 150 tests have been administered in Champaign County, and just one has come back positive.

Health officials emphasize that everyone is at risk of contracting the coronavirus and should take shelter-in-place orders seriously. While at home, you should be self-monitoring your health. Remain alert for symptoms including fever, coughing, shortness of breath, and sore throat.
