Illinois Primary Election 2022: Live blog, updates, results and more

12:40 a.m.: SPRINGFIELD — Suburban Chicago personal injury lawyer Kathy Salvi has won the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in Illinois. Salvi topped a field of seven candidates Tuesday to win the nod to take on first-term incumbent Democratic Sen. Tammy Duckworth in November. Duckworth is a veteran of the Iraq War and is very popular in Illinois. Salvi campaigned on a pledge to work to unify the warring factions of her party. She maintains Duckworth is beatable because the fall election will be a vote about the success or failure of the Biden administration. – Associated Press

“I’d like to congratulate Congresswoman Miller and President Trump on their victory tonight. This was a hard-fought campaign, and I wish her the best in representing the citizens of the 15th District.

“It’s been the honor of a lifetime to serve the people of Illinois. I’m proud of the work our team has done for our constituents since 2013. Helping citizens cut through red tape and navigate the federal bureaucracy has always been one of my top priorities.

“We have delivered countless conservative policy solutions from historic tax cuts, student loan relief, farm programs, and investing in our transportation system.

“We’ve always worked to govern and make Washington work. As Republicans are poised to retake the House, it’s paramount that Republicans in Congress work to end dysfunction and deliver results for the American people.

“I look forward to campaigning with every Republican up and down the ticket across Illinois between now and November to ensure we take back our state and take back Congress.”

9:00 p.m.: Observation from part of Illinois congressional district 15.

8:27 p.m.: From the Associated Press: Darren Bailey wins the Republican nomination for governor in Illinois primary election.

8:24 p.m.: The Republican primary in the Illinois Congressional District 15 remains close.

7:53 p.m.: CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois Republicans are choosing a nominee to take on Gov. J.B. Pritzker this fall. Pritzker is a billionaire who easily won the Democratic nomination on Tuesday and who spent millions trying to get the rival he wants and increase his already sizable advantage in the state this fall. The Republican front-runner was conservative state Sen. Darren Bailey, a farmer who received former President Donald Trump’s endorsement Saturday. Bailey raised his statewide profile during the pandemic by opposing Pritzker’s COVID-19 measures. He sued Pritzker over a stay-at-home order the governor issued, and was escorted off the floor of the Legislature for refusing to wear a mask. – Associated Press

7:46 p.m.: The Associated Press is projecting incumbent JB Pritzker will win the Democratic primary in the race for Governor. His opponent is Chicago nurse Beverly Miles.

7:26 p.m.: TAYLORVILLE — Congressman Rodney Davis said he has the experience needed to represent Illinois’ new 15th Congressional District — including experience working with Donald Trump when he was president.

Rep. Rodney Davis (R-IL) speaks from his Taylorville election headquarters on June 28, 2022.

At an Election Day news conference in his hometown of Taylorville, Davis said that unlike his GOP primary opponent Mary Miller, he has four years of experience in working with the Trump administration.

“I’ve got a great track record of working with President Trump and his administration. Again, I’m the only member of Congress in this race who served with President Trump and his administration. I helped craft the Trump tax cut bill. I helped craft student loan debt repayment programs that are voluntary private sector approaches. These are the things that I’ve already gotten done,” Davis said.

Trump has endorsed Miller and appeared with the first-term Republican lawmaker at a rally last Saturday in Adams County.

Davis said the endorsement was a bad call on the former president’s part, and that he must have received bad advice. – Harrison Malkin, IPM News
